Usually floods occur in Bangladesh during the monsoon season. When it rains and water comes down from the Himalayas and other mountains, all the water in the rivers cannot flow into the sea at the same time. The water thus accumulated flooded both the banks of the river. The Farakka Dam on the Indian side of the Ganges also contributes to flooding.

Rescue operations began after the floods. People from all walks of life came forward to help the flood victims. Some national and international organizations also extended a helping hand. The government also tries its best. Local authorities come forward to help the poor and affected people with food, medicine, clean water and other necessities.
