A Street Beggar.
Answer : A person who lives by asking people for alms is a street beggar. He/She is a very common figure all over Bangladesh. A street beggar is generally seen in the market, footpaths or in front of religious institutions like mosque, mazar etc. His dress is very shabby, dirty and torn out. Beggars are of different types. Some are young, some are old, some can walk, some limp, a few move on push-carts. There are singing beggars as well as whining beggars. Sometimes they utter religious words and try to draw the attention of the passers-by. There is no certainty in a beggar's life. He does not have any definite place to live in; wherever he sleeps is his home. There are no fixed hours for his work. If the weather is bad, he cannot get enough alms. So he becomes a man without fortune. He looks forward to the days of religious festivals when people are more charitable than on other days. A beggar has almost nothing of his own. The first thing he loses on becoming a beggar is his sense of honour. He is not human, for he is not humanly treated. Pet animals often get better treatment than beggars do. We must do something about them, and do it quickly. We can help the beggar by giving him alms. But that does not solve the problem. What is needed is making it possible for him to participate in economic activities.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : যে লােকটি লােকজনদের কাছে ভিক্ষা চেয়ে জীবন ধারণ করে সেই রাস্তার ভিক্ষুক। সারা বাংলাদেশে সে একজন পরিচিত ব্যক্তি। রাস্তার ভিক্ষুককে সাধারণত বাজারে, ফুটপাতে অথবা মসজিদ, মাজার ইত্যাদির মতাে ধর্মীয় প্রতিষ্ঠানের সামনে দেখতে পাওয়া যায়। তার পােশাক পরিচ্ছদ অত্যন্ত জীর্ণশীর্ণ; নােংরা ও ছেড়া হয়। ভিক্ষুকরা বিভিন্ন ধরণের হয়। কেউ কেউ তরুণ, কেউ বা বৃদ্ধ, কেউ হাঁটতে পারে কেউ খোঁড়ায়, অল্প ক'জন রয়েছে যারা ঠেলা দেওয়া গাড়িতে চলাফেলা করে। গায়ক ভিক্ষুক ও বিলাপরত ভিক্ষুকও রয়েছে। মাঝেমধ্যে তারা ধর্মীয় কথাবার্তা বলেও পথিকদের মনযােগ আকৃষ্ট করতে চেষ্টা করে। একজন ভিক্ষুকের জীবনের কোনাে নিশ্চয়তা নেই। তার কোনাে সুনির্দিষ্ট থাকার স্থান নেই; যখন যেখানে সে ঘুমায় সেটিই তার ঘর হয়ে যায়। তার সুনির্দিষ্ট কোনাে কর্মঘণ্টা নেই। যদি আবহাওয়া খারাপ থাকে তাহলে সে পর্যাপ্ত ভিক্ষা পায় না। তাই সে একজন হতভাগা ব্যক্তি। সে ধর্মীয় সেই সব উৎসবের প্রতিক্ষায় থাকে যখন মানুষ অন্যান্য দিনগুলাে থেকে অধিক দানশীল হয়। ভিন্ষুকের নিজের বলতে প্রায় কিছুই নেই। ভিক্ষুক হওয়ার প্রথম দিন সে যে জিনিসটা হারায় তা হলাে তার সম্মানবােধ। সে মানবিক গুণসম্পন্ন নয় কারণ তার সাথে অমানবিক আচরণ করা হয়। পােশা জীবজন্তও প্রায়ই ভিক্ষুকের চেয়ে অধিক সদাচরণ পেয়ে থাকে। তাদের জন্য আমাদের কিছু একটা করা উচিৎ। আর তা করতে হবে যথাশীঘ্র। আমরা ভিক্ষা দিয়ে ভিক্ষুককে সাহায্য করতে পারি।কিন্তু এতে সমস্যার সমাধান হয় না। যা প্রয়ােজন তা হলা তাকে অর্থনৈতিক কার্যকলাপে অংশগ্রহণ করানাে।
