Answer : Once upon a time, a greedy dog stole a piece of meat from a nearby house. Holding it in its mouth, he began to cross the river over'a narrow bridge. He suddenly looked down on the river water. He saw his own image on the clear water below. He was so foolish that he took it for another dog with a piece of meat. He was very much greedy. His mouth became full of water. He wanted to get that piece of meat also. "I must fight that out and get his piece," said he. "I am so hungry." In fact, it was his own shadow and not another dog. As he opened his mouth to bark at his own shadow, the piece of meat fell down from his mouth. It dropped into the stream. He jumped into the water at once to get back his piece of meat. Much as he searched for it by diving and swimming, it got lost forever. For, it was carried away by the current of the stream. He was very sad and started to repent over his foolishness. But it was too late. He had to paid for his greediness.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদিন এক লােভী কুকুর নিকটস্থ একটি বাড়ি থেকে এক টুকরা মাংস চুরি করল। এটি মুখে নিয়ে সে একটা সরু সেতু দিয়ে নদী পার হতে শুরু করল। হঠাৎ সে নিচে নদীর দিকে তাকাল। সে নিচের স্বচ্ছ পানিতে তার প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখতে পেল। সে এতােই বােকা ছিল যে সে ভাবল এটি মাংসের টুকরা সহ অন্য একটি কুকুর। সে খুবই লােভী ছিল। তার মুখে পানি চলে আসল। সে মাংসের ঐ টুকরাটিও পেতে চাইল। সে বলল, "আমাকে অবশ্যই এর সাথে লড়াই করে টুকরাটি নিতে হবে। আমি খুবই ক্ষুধার্ত।" আসলে এটি অন্য কুকুর নয় বরং তার নিজের প্রতিবিস্ব ছিল। সে নিজ প্রতিবিস্বের প্রতি ঘেউ ঘেউ করার জন্যে মুখ খুলতেই মাংসের টুকরাটি তার মুখ থেকে নিচে পড়ে গেল। এটি নদীতে পড়ে গেল। সে সাথে সাথেই মাংসের টুকরাটি ফিরে পাওয়ার জন্যে নদীতে ঝাঁপ দিল। সে যতই ডুব দিয়ে এবং সাঁতরে টুকরােটি অনেক খুজল, ততই এটি চিরদিনের মতাে হারিয়ে গেল। কারণ এটি নদীর স্রোতে দূরে চলে গিয়েছিল। সে খুব দুঃখ পেল এবং নিজের বােকামির জন্যে আফসােস করতে লাগল। কিন্তু খুব দেরি হয়ে গিয়েছিল। তাকে লােভের শাস্তি পেতে হয়েছিল।
