একদা এক গ্রামে এক দরিদ্র কৃষক বাস করত। তার একটি চমৎকার রাজহংসী ছিল। হংসীটি প্রতিদিন একটা সােনার ডিম পাড়ত। কৃষকটি ডিম বাজারে বিক্রয় করত এবং শীঘ্রই স্বচ্ছল হয়ে গেল। কিন্তু কৃষকটি ছিল ভীষন লােভী। সে রাতারাতি ধনী হতে চাইল -----

Answer : Once there lived a poor farmer in a village. He had a wonderful goose. The goose laid a golden egg every day. The farmer used to sell the egg in the market and he became solvent soon. But the farmer was very greedy. He wanted to be rich overnight. He thought that the stomach of the goose was full of eggs. He wanted to get all the eggs at a time. If he could get all the eggs at a time, his dream of becoming rich would come true quickly. So to satisfy his utmost greed, he decided to kill the goose to get all the eggs. The farmer told the plan to his wife. His wife did. not agree to the proposal. She advised him to be tolerant and not to be greedy. But the farmer didn't pay any heed to his wife's advice. He could not resist his greed. One evening the farmer killed the goose and cut out the stomach of the goose. But there was no egg in the stomach of the goose. And now the goose was dead, no more eggs were laid. He was sorry and started crying. He became extremely disappointed. Thus, the greedy farmer lost everything. Soon the farmer became poor again. He realized his fault. Through this incident the greedy farmer understood that excessive greed brought misfortune for him.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা এক গ্রামে এক দরিদ্র কৃষক বাস করত। তার একটি চমৎকার রাজহংসী ছিল। হংসীটি প্রতিদিন একটি সােনার ডিম পাড়ত। কৃষকটি ডিম বাজারে বিক্রি করত এবং শীঘ্রই স্বচ্ছল হয়ে গেল। কিন্তু কৃষকটি ছিল ভীষণ লােভী। সে রাতারাতি ধনী হতে চাইল। সে ভাবত যে রাজ হংসীটির পেট ডিমে পরিপূর্ণ। সে একসাথে সব ডিম পেতে চাইল। যদি সে একবারে সব ডিম পায় তাহলে তার রাতারাতি ধনী হওয়ার স্বপ্ন সত্যি হয়ে যাবে। কাজেই সে তার বাসনা চরিতার্থ করতে এবং সব ডিম একসাথে পেতে রাজহংসীটিকে মারার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। কৃষকটি তার স্ব্রীকে তার পরিকল্পনার কথা বলল। তার স্ত্রী তার কথায় রাজী হলাে না। সে তাকে ধৈর্য্য ধরার ও লােভ না করার পরামর্শ দিল। কিন্তু কৃষকটি তার স্ত্রীর কথার তােয়াকা করল না। সে তার লােভ দমন করতে পারল না। একদিন বিকালে কৃষকটি রাজহংসীটিকে হত্যা করল এবং তার পেট কেটে ফেলল। কিন্তু হংসীটির পেটে কোন ডিম ছিল না। রাজহংসীটি এখন থেকে মৃত এবং আর কোনাে ডিম সে পাড়বে না। সে দু:খ পেয়ে কাঁদতে শুরু করল। সে খুব হতাশ হলাে। এভাবেই লােভী কৃষক সবকিছু হারাল। শীঘ্রই কৃষক আবার গরীব হয়ে গেল। সে তার ভুল বুঝতে পারল। এই ঘটনা থেকে কৃষকটি বুঝতে পারল যে অতিরিক্ত লােভ তার দুর্ভাগ্যের কারণ।
