একজন বৃদ্ধ কৃষকের চারজন ছেলে ছিল। তারা একে অন্যের সাথে ঝগড়া করত। এইসব কৃষককে কষ্ট দিত। প্রতিবেশীরাও তাদের উচ্চ চিৎকারের জন্য সবসময়ই বিরক্ত হতাে। সে তাদের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে খুবই চিন্তিত ছিল। একদিন কৃষকটি তার ছেলেদেরকে বলল -----

Answer : An old farmer had four sons. They used to quarrel with one another. This made the farmer unhappy. The neighbors were also disturbed every now and then for their loud shouts. He was very much anxious about their future. One day the farmer told his sons to bring four sticks. When they brought the sticks he tied the sticks and gave them the bundle of sticks. He told everyone of them to break it. Every son tried heart and soul to break the bundle one after another. But none could break it up. Then he untied the bundle and gave a stick to his every son. Now he asked everyone to break the stick. This time all of them broke their stick easily. Then the farmer disclosed the fact and purpose behind his plan. The farmer told his sons that if they would quarrel with one another and remain separate, any body could harm them easily. He advised them to remain united so that none could harm them. They should be much stronger like the bundle of the stick. At this the four sons learnt a great lesson and they never quarreled with each other after that. They began to live happily and unitedly.

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একজন বৃদ্ধ কৃষকের চারজন ছেলে ছিল। তারা একে অন্যের সাথে ঝগড়া করত। এইসব কৃষককে কষ্ট দিত। প্রতিবেশীরাও তাদের উচ্চ চিৎকারের জন্য সবসময়ই বিরক্ত হতাে। সে তাদের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে খুবই চিন্তিত ছিল। একদিন কৃষকটি তার ছেলেদেরকে চারটি লাঠি আনতে বলল। তারা লাঠিগুলাে আনার পর সে লাঠিগুলােকে বাঁধল এবং তাদের লাঠির আঁটিটা দিল। সে প্রত্যেককে সেটি ভাঙতে বলল। একজন একজন করে প্রত্যেকেই আঁটিটি ভাঙার যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা করল। কিন্তু কেউই তা ভাঙতে পারল না। অতঃপর সে আঁটি খুলে প্রত্যেককে একটি করে লাঠি দিল। এখন সে সবাইকে লাঠিটি ভাঙতে বলল। এইবার প্রত্যেকেই তাদের লাঠি সহজে ভাঙতে সক্ষম হলাে। তারপর কৃষক তার পরিকল্পনার পেছনের কারণ ও উদ্দেশ্য ব্যাখ্যা করল। কৃষকটি তার পুত্রদের বলল যে যদি তারা একে অন্যের সাথে ঝগড়া করে এবং আলাদা থাকে, তবে যে কেউই খুব সহজেই তাদের ক্ষতি করতে পারবে। সে তাদেরকে একত্রে থাকার উপদেশ দিল যাতে কেউ তাদের ক্ষতি করতে না পারে। লাঠির আঁটির মতাে তারা অধিকতর শক্তিশালী থাকবে। চার পুত্র অনেক বড় শিক্ষা পেল এবং এরপর তারা আর কোনােদিন একে অন্যের সাথে ঝগড়া করেনি। তারা সুখে এবং একত্রে বাস করতে লাগল।
